Protecting Costa Rica's Wilderness

Karen Mogensen
Nature Reserve

Explore and protect the heart of the Nicoya Peninsula — Over a 1000 hectares of tropical forest, home to countless species and vital watersheds.

Our History

A Legacy of Conservation

The reserve is named in honor of Karen Mogensen who, with her husband Nicolas Wessberg, Karen and Nicolas were instrumental in envisioning and co-creating the National Park System in Costa Rica.

In the 1950s and 60s, the Nicoya Peninsula was heavily logged for cattle farming. By the 1990s, only 21% of the peninsula’s forest remained. The need to secure this precious ecosystem was urgent.

In 1991, a small group of passionate conservationists, spearheaded by Luis Mena, had the vision to buy land to protect the forests. The initial land purchase in 1996 was the first move in a strategic battle against deforestation.
